Last summer, Rumble Productions asked me to do a promotional image for them based on Greg MacArthur's, "Snowman". Unfortunately I didn't get to see the play live, but it was a great deal of fun and a challenge distilling the script into the image that you see displayed below. I'd really like to do more of this kind of thing.

To breathe some new life into these parts again, here are some odds and ends / process shots of a few illustrations from somewhat recent months.

I had the pleasure of doing some really, really small character illustrations based off of cosplayers for a comicon themed information guide designed by a former instructor of mine, Alison Miyauchi. Final production size would be about an inch, so minimal details could be afforded to their designs.

Last December gave me the opportunity to finish up my first tattoo design commission for a private client with very specific requests. The final piece itself will span an their entire chest. Shown here are the rough sketches I did and the final image itself.

Aphrodite Born

I just recently finished another addition to an ongoing personal project tentatively called 'Mythos'. I was trying to portray Aphrodite with a similar amount of terrifying beauty and an air of reverence that a character like Galadriel (LOTR) imposes on all that come before her. I utilized design elements that are meant to mimic uteral shapes that speak of fertility and birth.

I really enjoyed information design class when I was still in school and had the pleasure of tapping into that particular design aesthetic for a recent editorial gig for The Apple Magazine. The article was about a five decade long collaborative cancer study on over 300,000 people across Canada. Using vectors certainly helped with the quick turn around time for this assignment and perhaps something to be explored more.

I also had the opportunity to do an illustration for the University of Alberta Alumni Faculty Magazine. Back in the early 60's, students had their campus library smoking space taken away from them in order to make way for more books. Illustration is displayed sans headline text.

A few months back while I was on the road in California, I had the pleasure of receiving this assignment about suffragette personality, Nellie McClung, and her exploits in championing women's rights in Canada. Not the easiest thing to find a variety of pictorial reference about her and her cohorts, but things worked out in the end. Doing the initial work for this job in public spaces was particularly refreshing. My thanks to Redpoint Media and Teresa Johnston for being great to work with.

I'm happy to say i'll be heading over to California for the next three weeks so updates will be a little sparse until I get back. Hope to get quite a bit of sketching in while i'm there so check back in a while and i'll be certain to have some raw material up.

Also, if you happen to be in Calgary on April 3rd, the official release party for The Anthology Project will be taking place from 7-11pm @ Fashion Central: #205, 100—7th Ave SW Calgary, AB T2P 0W4 Artists behind the book will be in attendance and there will be door prizes, so i'm told.

The ARK Project out of Argentina asked me to do a super quick illustration for them based on an animal native to my nation for their upcoming book compilation (show and release later this summer) with artists from around the world participating. Originally I wanted the arctic fox, but I think someone out of Scandinavia beat me to it. I opted for something a little closer to home that reminded me of childhood field trips to salmon hatcheries.

Few sketches from my trip to Vietnam and Hong Kong. Didn't sketch too much as I was running around all the time, but it was an intense and rewarding trip nonetheless. What you see here are just a few sketches that turned out alright. I was reminded on the trip that I have to not overdraw too much, as it seems to be a recurring tendency among my doodles.

...and the cherry on the cake! Three wonderful portraits done by my dear friend Vicki, her sister, and her little cousin. Constant sources of amusement. Here's my mug for reference.

Lastly, if you haven't tried Bon Bo Hue and dig the spice, then my friends this is for you! One of my favorite things to eat. Wish I had a bowl right now.

Richard Williams

I was talking to my good friend Chris recently, and he brought up this really interesting old Richard Williams (the man behind Roger Rabbit and The Thief and The Cobbler) feature that I thought was a brilliant example of the kind of dedication and adherence to quality that I admire in great artists. Watching it, reminds me of when I used to want to be an animator and that I have the utmost of respect and admiration for traditional animators and comic book artists. The sheer amount of work they produce and effort that goes into into their craft is inspiring.

There's a particular humbling moment at the end of part 2, into part 3, that kind of struck a chord with me. It's when Ken Harris sort of unwittingly brings Richard Williams back down to Earth and makes him think about his level of ability at that point in time. Really makes me wonder about what some of my inspirations would think about my stuff. A humbling thought indeed.

It's worth a watch if you have a moment to spare. The six parts can be found here.

Been thinking about a few long term projects the last month or so. I'll be posting here and there with projects in between. In the meantime I thought I'd get this one out of the way.

Edit: This is the original orientation of the painting. Adi Granov mentioned that the above composition and cropping killed the mood and flow of the piece and now that I look at it he's right (I just started drawing and fleshing out the final without enough planning beforehand). While the cropping is still tight in a few places, the version below seems more energetic in terms of how the eye goes through the composition. Thanks to Adi for catching that.
